On the 21st of November, me and my classmates had the chance to experience yet another holiday as a part of our discovery of American culture. This time it was Thanksgiving Day. The history of this celebration dates back to October 1621 when 53 Pilgrims and 90 Native Americans had a feast together. On this day, many people from the USA, Canada and other countries express their thanks to their family, friends and reflect on the successes of the previous year. This is how we celebrated it:
The turkey had been cooking from early morning in our school’s kitchen. That wasn’t the only food we had though. Some classmates prepared mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, cookies, biscuits, variety of sweet pastries, and much more. A few people even brought some of their family recipes. In addition to food, we also brought Pilgrim hats that we had made, and put them on. After the first few lessons of the day, our whole class together with Mrs. Čankyová and Matt, went to classroom no. 25, where we waited until the turkey was finished cooking. The other teachers we had invited started coming soon after. Mrs. Domenova even brought her son-in-law who’s also an American. We talked with him and he told us many things he had experienced while travelling around Europe. We listened to music, played games, and then everyone in the room had to say what they were thankful for. I won’t forget how Mr. Varsík improvised. Then the turkey finally arrived. Matt and Mrs. Čankyová carved it and gave it to us along with stuffing. Everything was delicious and we enjoyed this day as much as we could.
I want to thank the organizers and everyone who attended our meal for making this amazing day happen.
